It’s the biggest project I’ve been involved in outside of the deaf community and using interpreters to work on set. I had a lot of fun working with Martha Anger, who plays the role of Joy. I had the honor of playing her overbearing sister. One of the things I discovered about the acting process was that it’s highly crucial that whatever we say in American Sign Language is authentic and true to deaf culture– if our roles are as such. We are both deaf sisters, so that adds another nature of our relationship. We talk in a way so that we are relaxed and we easily understand each other. LaJuan, the director was very understanding and supportive of this process, so we made an excellent team. I enjoyed the experience thoroughly!

SYNOPSIS: “Harvest” explores the lives of four different people, from four different walks of life, struggling to make it work in these hard economic times. Carson, the husband of a paralyzed war veteran Anna, battles to cope with Anna’s paralysis and the grief of her loss. Joy, a deaf- college student with a scholarship to a prestigious ivy-league school, finds herself pregnant and in conflict to make the right decision. Randy, an ex-con, strives to support and care for his three younger siblings without getting back into the drug game. Vick, a homeless jazz musician, hustles to care for two children, who ran away from an abusive foster home.

An amazing short film, “Crazy Town” (still in in the production stage) was shot last month (with still more to shoot) with an amazing team, including Sean Young [Blade Runner, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Wall Street, Dune], Ed Gale [Chucky in Child's Play, Howard in Howard the Duck], Michael Monks [Air Force One, E.R., Carnivale, Friends, etc.], Hana Hayes [Criminal Minds, Buckett and Skinner's Epic Adventures], and the talented lead actress, Kyla Druckman! Carson Turell and Kyla Druckman are the writers and producers of this project, and I can’t thank them enough for hiring me to direct this project.

We are currently raising funds to complete the film, so please do check the Kickstarter video out. You get to see some of the seriously awesome footage in it. I’m not kidding. I think it’s one of my best work thus far. I’m pretty darn proud of it, so if you don’t even glimpse the video, I’ll hunt you for the rest of my life. I enjoyed meeting with Kat, the administrator of the Going Berdy team. She came all the way to the “green room” of the “Hero” ASL music video in North Hollywood!

She asked some intriguing questions that I enjoyed answering. It was an interesting interview process because I was answering questions in American Sign Language (my preferred mode of communication) and it’s tough to do that, actually without anyone who signs in ASL for me to feed off from.

It helped a lot that Kat knew some sign language so it was a positive experience!

AUDIO PODCAST: Interview of Jules Dameron on That Keith Wann Show

Thanks to Keith Wann, I was able to jump in for one interview, and had fun chatting with Keith Wann and Wink. They are truly hilarious and warm people, and have a big heart and want to share everything with everyone in terms of Deaf culture, their love for American Sign Language and a merging of that with comedy.

Merging comedy with American Sign Language is an ongoing battle since it’s about knowing your audiences and making a living off it. Keith and Wink feel deeply connected with the culturally deaf and hard of hearing audiences (that includes hearing people who are culturally deaf, too!) and I feel the same way. Regardless of what happens, we will continue to try to make a living, at the same time create what we deeply connect to, at least as our gifts to the same community that raised us.

Keep on bridging communities, Keith & Wink. You’ll see that I’m in favor of that, as well.

It’s official. “Beyond Essays” is now released online for purchase or rental. It’s also kept a low price so that people can enjoy the film. The platform that we’re using is Eggup.com – so that may require you to download an “Egg Player” so you can enjoy “Beyond Essays.” The reason for this is because, evidently, filmmaking is pretty expensive in general, so having some financial support for Damname Productions to continue making films is helpful for all of us.

Also, you can see that we’re advertising Deaf Women in Film on it as well, for obvious reasons. This film is a DWIF-heavy film, meaning we have key players involved that are deaf or hard of hearing women, including myself, and most of the cast.

“Beyond Essays” recently won an Audience Award at the Valley Film Festival and was shown at several film festivals, such as Deaffest, Maine Deaf Film Festival, Dovfilmfestival, and not to mention the Toronto Deaf Film and Arts Festival! It’s 12 minutes long, and all in American Sign Language with music and sound design. If you do decide to download it, be sure to write a review. We’d love to know what you think.

I am honored that “Beyond Essays” won the Audience Award from the Girl on Shorts program at the Valley Film Festival. It was a fun time, and I was truly happy that Amber Zion, Kalen Feeney, and so many others could attend this very special event!
